For The Love Of Bachata! Guest Instructor For August 2010 – Kari Bowling – Latin Dance Nation

Our guest instructor for August 2010 will be Kari Bowling…

“Kari Bowling is a principal dancer, instructor, performer and choreographer at Latin Dance Nation in Adelaide.

Kari began dancing at a young age, yet it wasn’t until discovering latin dance in her first year of university that she started to take her dancing seriously. After only a year of salsa classes with a number of Adelaide’s leading latin dance schools, Kari took off to travel and study dance in Latin America. She spent 5 months living in a number of Caribbean countries studying traditional latin dance forms, including learning son in Cuba and bachata in the Dominican Republic.

Upon returning to Australia, Kari began training as an instructor and was soon teaching freelance around Adelaide, both for dance schools and private classes. In 2008 she won the amateur division of the SA Australian Salsa Classic titles and also received the overall highest score. In 2009, with her current dance partner Johan Haris, she became the South Australian Bachata Champion (a title the duo look forward to defending at this year’s competition).

Kari now teaches for Latin Dance Nation 6 days a week , including salsa, bachata, zouk, samba de gafieira and Zumba but has been invited to teach and perform both interstate and overseas. In April 2010 Kari and Johan represented SA at the Sydney International Bachata Festival with a solo performance, pro team show and as instructors of Bachata Moderna (a style taught by very few instructors around Australia). In 2011 they will be teaching and performing both at the Sydney International Bachata Festival and in Los Angeles at the LA Bachata Festival.”

Kari will be teaching four classes on behalf of the Hybrid Kinetic Dance Group:

  • Friday the 6th of August 2010.
  • Friday the 13th of August 2010.
  • Friday the 20th of August 2010.
  • Friday the 27th of August 2010.

From 8.45pm to 9.45pm at the North Adelaide Community Centre, enjoy.

Cheers

How To Dance Like Ellen DeGeneres

How To Dance Like Ellen DeGeneres

How To Dance Like Ellen DeGeneres

The Ellen DeGeneres Project is about promoting Adelaide to Ellen DeGeneres but there is a lot more to it than that.

It’s about promoting Adelaide to the rest of the world, more specifically uniting the Film, Comedy, Music and Dance communities in Adelaide.

It may happen in a few weeks or it may happen in a few years but either way, it will open the flood gates and serve as the tipping point for other stars, celebrities and influential people of the world to take notice of us.

The awesome part is that you now have the opportunity to say that you were there at the start, when it all began.

To be part of a history making event, a legend, a legacy that people will be talking about for years to come.

Tickets are on sale now and you can get them from one of our official partners here:

***** BTW There will be no salsa class this Friday the 30th of July because everyone will be at the Highway for the Ellen2Adelaide party! *****

Do You Need Any Special Or Preferred Shoes For Dancing?

By: Loc Tran

I received a question from one of the members of our Facebook group (Adam) recently who asked:

“Hey do you need any special or preferred shoes for this?”

The short answer is no, you can wear whatever shoes you want to, however dance shoes do make a huge difference, if you watch people on a dance floor you will notice that the ones who look like they know what they are doing are usually wearing some form of dance shoe.

Here are some reasons why you should consider investing in a pair of dance shoes:

  1. Most women’s shoes do not have the strength, fit, stability or comfort suitable for dancing, so instead of concentrating on their partner, the dancing and the music they end up worrying more about trying not to fall over and their sore feet.
  2. The uppers of their shoes may stretch and break.
  3. The shoe fronts may be too pointy and squeeze the toes too hard. Choose a snug but not toe-crushing fit.
  4. Open toe shoes may have too large an opening, allowing the foot to slide right through the front, which is not cool at all. Latin dancers typically wear open-toed shoes or strappy sandals with a 9mm flared heel.
  5. Heels often break or slant to one side and are usually too high and thin.
  6. Most dancers soon realise that heels higher than 65mm make energetic dancing for long periods of time a painful experience. Slim heels make turns and other moves easier. Flared heels are preferred for the Latin dances because they provide more stability.
  7. With men’s shoes, usually they tend to be too bulky, too long and too heavy.
  8. The soles are too rigid and do not have enough slip to spin and slide properly. Non-slip soles are essential, look for sueded soles which provide the right combination of grip and slide. Rubber sneaker-like soles can stick to the floor and cause knee injuries and leather soles can slide too much. Dance shoes have thinner soles than normal shoes. Most dancing shoes have a steel shank for support. The shoe material is flexible and lightweight. Continue reading
